What Clean Should Smell Like (Hint: Not Much)
There’s a particular smell a lot of us grew up associating with a clean house. It’s sharp and a little medicinal, sometimes with an artificial lemon or “spring meadow” layered on top, and it hangs around for hours after the mopping is done. For years, that smell was the proof. If you could smell it, the house had been cleaned.
For plenty of households, though, that smell is the part they’ve learned to brace for. A client told us recently, “I really love that you all don’t use heavily fragranced products. We have a lot of smell sensitivities and cleaning products have been an issue for us in the past.” We hear some version of that more often than you might expect, usually from someone who has spent a long time opening windows after the cleaners leave and assuming that was simply part of the deal.
Three Hours, Your List
A priority clean is three hours with one of our cleaning technicians for $165. Before the visit, you tell us which areas matter most and in what order. There’s a space for this on our booking form, so you can write it the way you’d say it to a friend: kitchen first, then the primary bathroom, then the floors if there’s time.
Your technician works through the list in that order and gets as far as three hours allows. Nothing gets decided for you, and nothing at the top of your list gets passed over for something that happened to be easier to reach.
Why It Matters More in the Fall
In the summer, the house is open more often. Doors swing in and out all day, windows go up on the first nice evening, and air moves through. Once the weather turns, all of that closes up. Whatever a cleaning product leaves behind has nowhere to go, so a scent that would have faded by lunchtime in June can linger well into the evening in October.
For anyone in the house who’s sensitive to strong scents, that’s the difference between a clean home that feels like relief and one that comes with a headache. It matters for kids, who are closer to the floors and tend to put their hands on everything. It matters for pets, who spend their whole day at floor level and can’t tell you when something bothers them. And it matters for anyone who’s ever felt their nose run or their head tighten after walking into a freshly cleaned room.
Clean Doesn't Have to Announce Itself
When we choose products, we’re looking for two things: they have to clean well, and they shouldn’t leave a cloud behind. We use natural, non-toxic products without heavy fragrance on every visit, whether it’s a first deep clean or a routine recurring one. It isn’t an upgrade or a special request you need to remember to make. It’s simply how we clean.
We pair those products with HEPA-filtered vacuums, which trap fine dust and allergens instead of blowing them back into the air. That combination matters most for households managing allergies or sensitivities, but most clients notice it even if nobody in the house would describe themselves as sensitive. The house feels lighter to walk into. It smells like nothing in particular, which, it turns out, is what clean smells like.
What Clients Notice First
What most people notice first is the absence of a smell, which takes a moment to register as a good thing. There’s no need to air the place out, keep the dog in the laundry room for an hour, or wait before anyone sits on the couch. You come home, the house is clean, and you get on with your evening.
If fragrance has been a sticking point for your household, or if you’d just like to know exactly what we use before we come in, we’re happy to walk you through it.
